Our Philosophy:

Is based on the belief that “every individual matters, every individual has a role to play and every individual makes a difference.”

Dr. Jane Goodall founded Roots & Shoots in 1991 an environmental and humanitarian programme of the Jane Goodall Institute. The program’s mission to foster respect and compassion for all living things, to promote understanding of all cultures and beliefs and to inspire each individual to take action and make the world a better place for the environment, animals and the human community.

Roots & Shoots groups undertake service learning projects that involve care and concern for the people, animals and the environment. Roots & Shoots is the avenue through which pupils who are interested in the environment can take practical action to do something to protect it. It is also an avenue through which further knowledge can be built on what they learnt in the classroom. There are now over 120 countries that support Roots & Shoots groups around the world.
Roots & Shoots in Uganda has over 7000 pupils in 107 districts which include, Ibanda, Kasese, Hoima, Masindi, Kabarole, Bushenyi and Kampala.
The pupils participate in workshops and are supplied with Roots & Shoots materials like handbooks, which contain information on how to run their groups, activity ideas and information sheets. The groups also receive a newsletters and visits from the coordinator each school term.
